Omar approves Rs 40 cr Action Plan for colleges
Jammu, Nov 16 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today approved a Rs 40 crore Action Plan for strengthening infrastructure in degree colleges in the state.
The plan envisages upgradation of the existing infrastructure apart from addition of critical requirements in the degree colleges.
It was formulated keeping in view recommendations of the National Accredited Assessment Committee (NAAC).
Approving the Action Plan, the Chief Minister directed completion of the work during the current financial year.
He also directed monitoring of the implementation work by the Minister in-charge and the Administrative Secretary, officials said.
Under the Action Plan, infrastructure development would be carried out in 74 government degree colleges in the state.
Omar also released Rs 45 crore to be utilised by the School Education Department under a similar Action Plan.(PTI)

Girl's throat slashed for resisting assault
Hyderabad: A youth slashed the throat of a 14-year-old girl after she resisted his sexual assault in Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district in the early hours today, police said.
The incident occurred at Madnur village under Kothapatnam mandal at around 3 am when one Ram Kotaiah entered his neighbour's house where the Victim, a class ninth student, was sleeping and attempted to molest her.
But the girl raised an alarm and resisted his attempts to sexually assault her, they said.
"As the girl identified the assailant, he allegedly slit her throat with a knife before fleeing from the scene," a police officer said.
The girl has been admitted to a hospital in Ongole town where she was operated with seven stitches on her neck and her condition is out of danger, the officer added.
Kothapatnam police have registered a case of attempt to murder and other relevant sections of the IPC and launched a search to nab Ram Kotaiah. (PTI)

Telugu Techie Figures in US Top Achievers
Four Indian-Americans, including Mr Vikas Reddy, a Telugu, have been named among 30 of America’s “coolest young entrepreneurs” by monthly business magazine Inc. The achievers are people who are “building unique brands, making money along the way and changing the way we do business”. Mr Vikas Reddy co-founded Occipital, a technology start-up in Colorado in 2008. It has developed RedLaser, a best selling iPhone app that lets users scan barcodes. Since May 2009, RedLaser has been downloaded more than two million times, making it one of the most popular paid iPhone apps in the market. According to Mr Vikas Reddy, their firm Occipital in December 2008 “was running on fumes.” They finally decided to ask their families for money. Mr Vikas Reddy wrote on his blog they had decided to build next generation augmented reality technology, but it was still going to require some money. “So we did something that didn’t require a lot of money,” he wrote. Occipetal launched an iPhone app called ClearCam, which is actually the beginnings of next-generation augmented reality engine. “To users, it doubles the resolution of their iPhone 2G/3G camera, takes photos faster, and can intelligently select sharp photos, Mr Reddy notes. “Since the camera was perhaps the most-criticised element of the iPhones, ClearCam was a hit, and has been downloaded 780,000 times.”

Google to hire 300 engineers in India
Hyderabad: Global Internet search giant Google Inc on Thursday announced plans to hire 300 people to double its engineering headcount in India and strengthen Hyderabad as its largest cloud computing research and development centre in the world.
The firm plans to recruit 300 engineers in couple of years to increase its presence in India with focus on cloud computing.
Peeyush Ranjan, head of engineering, Google India, told reporters here that 300 engineers were already working in Hyderabad and Bangalore on cloud computing.
Cloud computing is web-based processing, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices such as smart phones on demand over the Internet.
Google already has cloud computing centres in Mountain View in California and New York but the Hyderabad centre is the largest in terms of the number of engineers working here.
Google already has 2,000 employees in India and the Hyderabad engineering centre will be core to its efforts to focus on cloud computing, he said.
While the engineering centre in Bangalore is working on cloud computing as well as search, ads, maps and news, the Hyderabad centre is focusing only on cloud computing.
"The work being done in these two centres are global in nature and the technologies they are developing are for the business globally," he said.
There is an administrative control panel in Bangalore which manages the business of a customer once it is up in clouds.
"India is a great market for cloud computing as it is the most price sensitive. Since cloud computing ensures efficiency and better utilization of resources, small and medium business are excited about it," he said.
Google has around three million customers in cloud computing globally. About 100,000 businesses in India are already using Google's cloud computing technologies. (IANS)
